The journey to 100 friends begins with a single conversation.

Socially anxious high school student Shoko Komi’s greatest dream is to make some friends, but everyone at school mistakes her crippling social anxiety for cool reserve. Luckily she meets Tadano, a timid wallflower who decides to step out of his comfort zone in order to help her achieve her goal of making 100 friends.

It’s time for the national health exam at Itan High, and the excitement of eye exams and height measurements have fanned the flames of competition for the unremarkable Makeru Yadano. She’s determined to beat the class idol Komi in the health test, and Komi’s total obliviousness to their impassioned duel just feeds Makeru’s determination. As the epic battle heats up, how will Komi handle her first rival when she’s barely made her first friends?!

One lives in a fortress, the other in a cage

The second volume of Komi Can't Communicate delivered on the promise set by the first and I can say that it joins We Never Learn and Yuri Is My Job! as the best new manga discoveries I've made in 2019. We see Komi starting to branch out and engage in social activity. She has Tadano and Najimi at her place, she goes out for ramen and on a shopping trip, the gang tries to figure out her clothing style. There are some new people. Yadano sees herself as a rival to Komi. Nakanaka is a highly eccentric type. Then, there is Yamai, who has some major issues, as Tadano finds out the hard way. It's a series that is funny and touching at the same time. Above, I mentioned the series Yuri Is My Job! and it occurs to me that Komi has parallels with its protagonist, Hime, as both are defined by the facades of their lives. Komi's social anxiety has the unintended effect of making her come across as an uber-cool Olympian goddess. It took Tadano to figure out Komi is an ordinary person with a problem. Hime has a carefully constructed facade of adorable perfection which she hopes will allow her to be seen as the ideal mate for a billionaire. That gets disrupted when she starts working with a girl named Mitsuki, who hates Hime's phony front but just might love her. You could say that Hime's facade is her fortress, but she's always worried it will crumble, leaving her exposed to the world. Komi's facade is a cage; gilded and it gives her an enviable social position, but it's still a cage and she wants to break out and become part of the world. It is interesting to see two characters with similar situations but different perspectives.

Good Continuation

Volume 2 of Komi Can't Communicate continues the story of Shoko Komi, a high school girl with crippling social anxiety. Along with the return of the already introduced characters of Tadano and Najimi, new characters are introduced in this volume. These include the competitive classmate Makeru Yadano and the obsessive Ren Yamai, who has an (unreciprocated) crush on Komi. The story continues much as the first volume as Komi and friends go about their lives as high schoolers while Komi tries to improve on her abysmal communication skills. Overall I found this to be an excellent second volume. Everything that was done well in volume 1 is done just as well here. This includes the good art. The artist did an excellent job of using expressive faces and other poses to really create many lively and amusing situations throughout the book. The story is fun to read as well as Komi and friends try different things to try to break Komi out of her shell. I definitely got several laughs reading this. In conclusion, if you enjoyed volume 1 of this manga, you will certainly enjoy volume 2.

5 stars for the manga, 3 stars for VIZ

This manga is definitely 5 stars, it is subtle but hilarious (especially page 48 lol). The art style compliments the humorous nature of the story and is pleasant to look at. VIZ's quality control is going downhill though, as both the first volume and this one have had misaligned spines. Just be aware that there is a very high probability that your volume will have a misaligned spine or some kind of spine damage.

After a few misfires, we've got a good start

I wasn't really sure what all to think about the 1st volume. Everyone seemed, hurried? They seemed a bit off, plus there was some bullying, which I detest. Now, the group grows. Little-miss-psycho is an odd addition to the group. The rest seem, mostly, like they're right where they should be. Art, very good. I really enjoy this creator's style. Dialogue, good, mostly. A bit strained at times. Characters, believable mostly. Some relatable, some detestable.

Review

About a VERY shy girl who trying to make friends w/a guys help.

Komi the Brave!

I was so excited when I got this manga after reading the first one, it was cool seeing Komi make more friends and stick up for herself in her own way. If you loved the first volume, you’ll love the second one just as much!

Komi is Popular

Komi makes more friends. All Komi’s friends are special... Komi still can’t communicate. I’m enjoying the series so far. Tadano and Komi get along well and I love watching their interactions the most.

Love the series!

This is such a great series. Komi is so relatable. Looking forward to the next volume in this series and seeing where Komi stands and her Progress.

Very enjoyable

It's a very interesting take on something I've never seen before I enjoy watching the development of komi as she gains more freinds.

Makes me happy when i read this.

Every time I read this series it makes me happy, makes me feel like a kid again. This manga is one of the best and the only one that I'm up to date with.
